To meet the growing demands of people and public, the Tamilnadu Government decided to start a new Medical College at Kanyakumari District. The Govt. T.B. Hospital campus at Asaripallam, Nagercoil in Kanyakumari District was selected as the site for the proposed Government Medical College. In G.O. M.s. No. 82/H &F.W. Dept., dated 11.03.2001 the Government accorded sanction for the establishment of the new Government Medical College at Kanyakumari District during the year 2001 - 2002 with an annual intake of 100 students in M.B.B.S. Course. The foundation stone also was laid for the same on 12.03.2001 by the Hon'ble Minister for Health & Family Welfare. Accordingly the Government of India, Ministry of Health and Family Welfare, New Delhi issued permission to start a Medical College at Asaripallam in Kanyakumari District vide No.U. 12012/101/03-ME (P- II) dated 28.07.2004 and the college is new functioning with effect from 16.08.2004 onwards with an annual intake of 100 students. As per the Medical Counsil of India's revised instruction Medical College and Hospital should be in the same campus, it is proposed to have 500 bedded hospital wroth around Rs.21.73 crores. The estimates for the new building had been prepared and submitted to Govt. on 04.06.2002. As per above G.O.No.219 of Health & Family Welfare the permission had been granted for construction of 300 bedded hospital at a cost of Rs. 5.00 crores. The newly constructed 300 bedded hospital was inaugurated by Honourable Chief Minister of Tamilnadu on 08.12.2004. Until the permanent buildings are constructed, the college has been started in the temporary buildings with all the following departments for the first phase (1st MBBS.,) Depts., of Anatomy, Physiology, Bio-Chemistry, and Community Medicine, and for the second Phase (IInd MBBS) Departments of Pathology, Pharmacology, Mocrobiology & Forensic Medicine, Medical Education Department, Lecture hall, Central Library, Central Animal House, Administrative Block, Hostels for the both Men & Women students separately, Mess, Kitchen and dinning hall as per the norms prescribed by the Government of India. This temporary building structure is constructed by modifying and renovating some of the wards already existing in the Govt. T.B. Hospital at a cost of 1.30 crore. Further, the Medical Council of India, New Delhi visited this college on 23.04.2005 for renewal of permission for 1st year MBBS., and admission of 2nd year batch of MBBS., students for 2005-2006. Subsequently the permission was granted on 24.06.2005. To add feather of Nursing was started on 3rd February 2004 with annual in take of 50 students per batch. Currently two batches of Nursing students are studying. At present the following Departments are functioning in this Medical College and Hospital with full faculty members. 1. Anatomy 2. Physiology 3. Bio-Chemistry 4. Community Medicine 5. Pathology 6. Pharmacology 7. Micro-Biology 8. Forensic Medicine 9. Medicine and allied Departments 10. Surgery and allied Departments 11. Obstertrics & Gynaecology Departments 12. Paediatric Department There is a Central Library with 2800 books and 40 Indian & Foreign Journals. The following primary Health Centres and Urban Health Centre are being attached to this Medical College, for the training of students studying in this Medical College. 1. P.H.C. Rajakkamangalam 2. P.H.C. Chenbagaramanputhur 3. P.H.C. Kothanallur 4. Urban Health Centre, Vadiveeswaram At present the following buildings are under construction with a sanction of Rs. 45.44 crores. College Side Faculty Block, Administrative Block, Examination Hall, Library, Central Animal House, Bank and Post Office, Generator Room, Lecture Halls, (3 x 12, 1 x 250) and Hostel for Ladies and Gents for each 250 students. Hospital Side Resident Doctor's Quarters, Nurses Quarters, C.R.R.I. Quarters, Dean, R.M.O & A.R.M.O. Quarters, Additional 300 Bedded Hospital, O.P.Block, Gallery type Lecture Halls for 150 students.
